98 corolla catalytic converter

CEL went on in my '98 Corolla. Car has 142,000 miles and this was first time for cel so I took it in for a diagnostic test. Dealer said catalytic converter was clogged and that they would gladly replace it for $1,250. I know I can get it done much cheaper elsewhere. The thing that bothered me is that dealer also said failure to replace it would ruin my engine. Currently I do not sense any drop in performance/mileage at all....if the cel hadn't come on I never would have guessed anything was wrong. Are they feeding me a line?

Yes get a race cat
and yeah, not replacing it will kill your engine. Read on MR-S engine failures, all of them are related to the cat getting clogged and blowing stuff back into the cylinders.

I also have a '98 toyota corolla and the check engine light came on. The auto shop said it was the catalytic converter and I am having trouble getting it to start. Money is very tight so I looked to see how much the part costs and AutoZone has a direct fit and a universal fit. What is the difference and are these parts reliable? Any help someone can give me would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Audrey M.
