when buying a new car, is it standard for the dealership to get new plates for it, or is it better to use old plates and transfer over

Its your choice, if your old plates still look good, then keep them, it your old plates look really dingy, then get new ones. Its always a shame seing a brand new car with gross plates.

The dealership should do as you wish. Letting them exchange your old rusted plates and using the credit against yoru new plates will save you time. Processing time at MTO offices suck!!

Well one way to make sure the car runs well and does not void the warranty is use only the specified parts for your car and make sure if you are putting any performance parts or electronics in your car that they wont void the warrantly. The best way to take care of your car is to make sure that you do your oil changes regularly with good oil and use the user manual (has all the treatment for your car, and when you need to do it)
