I have had two Corollas. An 04 Corolla S and now an 05 Corolla XRS ( high performance one) and none of the two had any problems. Toyota officially said it was due to the higher concentration of sulphur in the gas that caused the pungent smell to emit and I would guess the gas in my city has low sulphur concentration. Although, I believe the new 05s do not have this issue.

i thought the smell was good from inside when it was new, ahhaha.. but smell a bit pain after few months cuz of stone chips. but overall, it is great to get a corolla
I had that same smell on my 03 rolla...My son would always ask me if I cut the cheese It happened a few times a week and after a few months it went away, at first I thought it was the outside air, its not the gas because why would the smell go away and never come back in two years also before I bought the car I read reviews and some of the owners complained about this smell also...It never got that bad and only lasted for a little while so I forgot/didn't ask the dealer...so I don't really know what caused the smell...hope it wasn't toxic and cause lung cancer.....Raddman Out...
Yeah, I've smelt that too. My friend and I stopped over at the dealership and asked them why we got those smells through the vent, he said that it has to do with the the gas. I think this is the case only with the 03s.
But its not a big deal, its only when you first switch on the a/c, lasts for a few seconds. No big deal.
Is there a way to get this problem fixed? Does anyone know?
For about the first 2 weeks after I got my car I noticed a smell coming from my a/c vents, though it wasnt foul smelling. I figure thats what the new car smell does?
I would say after 5,000 miles it stopped doing it regular and then within the next few thousand it did it a few times then stopped all together..might last longer/shorter/ not at all on other cars,I don't really remember if it only happened when the AC was turned on. I think if this happened to a lot of people and they complained to the dealer they would check it out(meaning they know exactly what it is)..If its sulfur in the gas why don't other cars smell? and why did mine stop...I can smell ethanol in the gas sometimes...when im outside and the car is running....Raddman Out...
I can't buy that ...Why is the smell so prevalent on new corollas why not on a 95 Chevy and many other cars? and why have I driven my car 30,000 miles since I last smelled that odor?...I buy gas at wherever I find it the cheapest(meaning I use many different dealers) and why would that sulfur smell be in your car with all the windows rolled up and a brand new exhaust system...I don't smell ethanol burning inside my car why the sulfur/egg smell?...I believe its something else...JMHO....Raddman Out...
The only time I smell that is when someone in front of me kicks it into overdrive and you smell their catalytic converter failing to do it's job (I believe that's normal under hard acceleration).
I think there's more hype than reality on this smell thing. I've seen (smelt) it on Mazda's, Honda's, Toyota's, GM's, etc, etc. No one really seems to know why some cars are affected while others aren't....even within the same model.
my saab and the eclipse down the street does the same thing and someone said it was the o2 sensors but it only does it under hard acceleration so i dont know.
