Well, the AE102 is a pretty fun car to drive, ie tossable and has a pretty good suspension design. However depending on the engine, it can be slow as hell. If you start out with the 7A-FE (1.8L), and stick shift, you're set to go for a while. But if it's got the 1.6L like my bro's, then that's another story. Otherwise it's a sturdy and reliable car. A lot more info can be found at http://www.corollaperformance.com
I have a 91 Corolla, its the 1.6L version. They are good cars but if you want to do anything performance wise its pretty hard. I've notice though in the past year some interior items have been breaking on thier own such as the inside door handle, the slide position indicator and the cup holder. You just have to make sure its in good shape.

He said he was looking into a 91... I think that is a AE9#.

Heh my inside door handle broke too!! Didn't know it was common with all Corollas.
One problem I have seen with '91 Corollas is that their mufflers always need to be replaced and their exhaust headgasket is faulty. Granted its a small and relatively cheap part, but it keeps breaking every year or so. All it does is make the car louder, like it has a performance tip..for free! =D

my ae92 88 4 dr had that muffler replaced like 4-6 times in 12 years.. i dunno what it is with it.. maybe it just doesn;t get hot enough...... to evap all the water..
Yup every three years, the muffler goes bye-bye! Just had mine changed a month ago.
The car should last you a while. A long time if you maintain it good. My car has a little over 150,000km and it runs very strong.
Well, it lacks power and lacks power on the freeway/highway, but other than that, it's a good and reliable car for city driving.. and occassional long trips.
my 91 ae92 sedan, runs like a dream. has 175,000 miles. the only thing that has gone bad is the starter and that petty stuff, and the valve cover spark plug tube seals, but i started using full systhic oil and putting that in the car that has been running on mineral oil , ive heard it will cause leaks going from nonsytheic to systheics. but value cover gasket isnt anything major like droping a new air filter in.IF I WAS YOU I WOULD LOOK FOR A AE92 1991 GTS COROLLA with the 4age engine in it.the sedan has the 4afe engine but they offered the 4age engine for the sedan.i have the 4afe and im soon going to get the 4agze enginehes what my car looks like,,,

i havent done much to it paints orginal and ect. but i have the LE edition. and the door handle of course are gonna break look how cheap they are and the design is poor cause when you open it the weight is constraited on two points , to much load on it.
I know this comes in a bit late, but I got a AE92 aswell, the 4dr sedan not the GT-S one. 91 year model and carbed, and I gotta say I really love it. I know it's not a rocket, but I've beaten most of my friends cars with it. It's got an 4A-F with ~45000km on the odo (believe it or not
my 4 door ae102 has just over 237,000km on it and still pushing hard! i drive the piss out of it too! i want to see if it will reach the 400,000km mark...if not...gze with a t3/4 turbo!!!!
i've got a 90 Corolla LE Sedan, and my inside door handle broke too. who says you can't put performance into these little 4A-FE's? go to http://www.corollacustomz.com and get on the forums and ask about the AE92 SDN, there are people who have put some power into them. and even if you don't want to soup up this engine, just drop a 4A-GE or 4A-GZE in, it'll fit nicely and give you hella boost.
It's tough to get past the lack of cubes in the engine. I have a GT-S coupe with the 4AGE and have found it great as long as you keep the rpm's up. Mine has 350,000 kms. on it and I have been running synthetic in it since the high-order digit in my odometer turned 1. The reason synthetic gets a rap as being a leaker is because synthetic cleans out all the sludge that may actually be masking a leak at a gasket. The gaskets may have sheared long ago but since sludge is blocking the path to it, nobody is the wiser to the leak. Ad synthetic and your sludge breaks up, exposing the gasket leak. Synthetic is undeniably better, but is it worth the huge increase in cost over frequent oil changes? Only you can answer that.
I probably share the same door hardware with you guys. Mine hasn't broken but I also scream at door slammers. :x
the 4af /4afe engines are very strong... mine as 236000km on it and still give me the red line no problems ..... but now i need more power....
thats why i'm putting this winter a 4age..blue top.... for those who want to change the engine...realise the costs :-? sure the engine fits right there ...but you have to think about the trany.... c50 versus c52 :o altough your stock trany on your 4af can take the power of a 4age .... the gears are not the same :-? ....and by changin the tranny you have to change the shafts...and breaks... (put gts ones) :o
and for those that have a 4af(carburator)you have to change the gas tank....why??!? do you ask? :-?
the fuel pump on a 4af is mechanical on the head of the engine....the 4age pump is electric....in the gas tank....both gas tank are similar but you'll have to find a spider to put the electrical pump in....
also you cant keep your radiator... its not the same....
and you'll need a oil cooler ....cuz all 4age as one...not the 4af...
these are a few things... you have to consider if you want to change the engine...lot of planing...and money.. but its worth it...
anyway i'm changing everything... plus the rear suspension...
and then next year ..... a nice turbo will probably go on that....
hey do u got a better pic of the ass end of your car i want to see the clear tail lights, ive been wanting to see what they look like on the car. i got a white corolla and with clear lenses it would look bad. just want to see what they look like
