ae92: not turning over

I just got done putting a new head gasket in my car and i have put everything back together. I tried to start it up but all it does is crack and not ever ignite. I’ve regapped the spark plugs, redid the timing on the distributor and put gas in the cylinders to "prime" it. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong. Also when I do try and start it i can hear the air going out the exhaust.

i dont think there is any way to get it to be 180deg off. the end of the ex cam that it plugs into has diff sizes of tabs and it wont plug in upside down(180deg off).

if the starter itself isn't cranking then check your battery connection... sounds dumb, but toyotas have issues if there is just a slightly poor connection it won't work

if you get spark, then the Ignitor is fine and the coil is fine... you can cancel those out...... if you're getting fuel you can rule out the fuel filter, pump, injectors and ecu........ your timing belt might be off a tooth or two

That is currently how it is set up (number = cylinder number) because that’s how i thought the book says to do it but I think it is wrong somehow. Could anyone go look and see how there’s it set up real fast.
Also the book said that there were marks on the timing belt where it would line up with the marks of the timing sprocket but i didn’t see any. So i just put the timing mark on the exhaust cam level with the head and put it on TDC and put it on. It cranks smoothly so I’m pretty sure it is correct.

anyone else got suggestions on how i could tell if my timing is off, also if i go buy a new timing belt will it have the timing marks on it?

I think your wires are wrong, if I am looking at it right. You have one out of four right. I looked at mine, and this is how it should go:

The one you have marked 1 should be going to cyl 3.

The one you have marked 2 should be going to cyl 1

The one you have marked 3 should be going to cyl 2.

The one you have marked 4 should be going to cyl 4.

The firing order, going clockwise and starting from the top (#1 in your pic), should be 3-1-4-2.

Try this, and let me know if it starts! Regards, Aaron

according to this it should be (#1 in my pic)3-1-2-4 this seems way too hard due to poor manuals.

Alright, this should null any speculation/confusion. My ole 4AFE is sittin' by her lonesome in the corner.

Just remember that the motor spins clockwise and the firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2. And since you're looking towards the front of the motor instead of at the motor, the dizzy rotor turns counter-clockwise. So, it'll hit the aforementioned posts in the correct firing order.
