89 corolla vibration on acceleration ??

1989 Corolla 1.6 auto

When put in drive there is severe vibration on accelleration. It shifts fine.. cruises fine Trans fluid ok. This does not do it in reverse. I power brake in drive see no movement such as mounts. This does it mostly when starting from a stop. If you start out real slow it is minimal,. The faster you start out the worse it is.
It will do it in drive with foot on brake (powerbrake) which should rule out CV joints, shafts and wheel bearings.

Any ideas out here?

Thanks..

DAD

This does not do it in reverse.

Just my opinion but it sounds like a loose/broken motor/tranny mount, when you go foward in drive the engine torque tends to pull your engine one way and the mounts hold you engine steady..If you go in reverse you are doing this backwords using the good mount to hold....JMHO ...Raddman Out....

the mounts are probably soft enough to let metal parts come together , if it is a steady rock in gear at idle, its because a cyl. isnt working, probably plug wires or cap or plugs, the plug that comes out of the cyl. that isnt working will be dark

If it was a problem with a cylinder, he'd notice it when it's idling in reverse, too. But since he said reverse is fine, mounts are the first thing I'd check.

Well the engine still spins the same direction that it did when going forward, when you are driving in reverse. Only the transmission output shaft spins the opposite direction.
