Well, i'm fairly new to this whole car scene and everything so pardon me if i ask dumb questions or say unintelligent things. ...ummm.

Hi.

I drive 1986 toyota corolla SR5. I love my car, this car is the only car i've driven to be so fun and the only car i've driven that actually feels like an extension of my body. last month some guy i met told me of this series of drifting and such. Initial D. yep i saw the intro and i freaked out, it was my car(more or less). so this guy is like you drive one of these and just sorta told me all about this car. i watched this series and i have a much deeper appreciation for my car. soon after i watch some episodes and such i want to know more about my car. well i found this forum.

i basically want to know what makes mine a true ae86? i have absolutely no knowlege on cars, though i'm catching on. i feel like it maybe the SOHC instead of the DOHC, just my kinda luck that i'd be shafted that kind of deal.

i also plan on buying another corolla gt-s later on, and making it my project car.

right now i'm sorta stuck, my tire just blown out and i'm thinking of getting new wheels all together. 15 inch performance tires maybe? i don't know. i don't expect to drift, i don't plan on drifting soon. though i would be a liar if i said drifting is not on my mind and in my dreams. any suggestions as what i could do? advice?

actually, all north american sr5's or gts' are all based on the ae86 chassis. and yes, your sr5 has the sohc 4ac as opposed to 4age that powers a gts or takumi's car.

the differences between the sr5 and the gts are basic mechanical and cosmetics.

The corolla gts is the platform which the majority of ae86 enthusiasts use due to engine, suspension and drivetrain configuration. While the sr5 LOOKS like the gts, it by all means is not as competetive as the gts due to the differences in parts.

You want to start wiht a gts because thats what the majority of go fast, after market parts are made for...not the sr5. The sr5 can be converted to a gts, but given your lack of automotive and mechanical knowledge, i would just start off with a gts as it would work out cheaper and easier in the long run.

Yea, thats my plan. i'm gonna be looking for a nice gts around here in town.

i knew it. the engine looked rather small so i figured it was the SOHC.

thanks guys.

what should i do about the tires though? should i just get normal wheels and wait on a gt-s? or would putting on good wheels on my sr5 be like putting a giant spoiler on a civic?

the sr5 and gt-s have the same bolt pattern anyway, so you can get nice wheels now and use them on your gt-s when you get one..

just to let you know.... ae86 just refers basically to the car years.... like i have an ae-92... but that could be a 4 door ae-92 with a carb 4a-f or it could be the 2 door gts with a 4a-ge.... (or it could be the gtz in japan with a 4a-gze!!!).... but actually i have a 2 door sr5 (with an efi 4a-fe).... i don't know what the ae or the 2 means, but i know the 9 in mine means it's the 9th generation corolla.... the ae-86 is the 8th generation corolla.... so, ae-86 just refers basically to the model years...
