Idle issues....please help.

A couple questions. I have an 85 GTS Corolla. When I first start the car it jumps the idle up to between 2-3000 RPM. It will gradually go down over time to the 1000-1500 range. Once I've been driving it for a while though, and I come to a stop, the car will remain idling at the red light or in front of my house, where ever, at about 2500-3000 RPM and last night started doing a slight idle surge of a 200 RPM variance. It also has a slight misfire that I can not seem to track down.....I've replaced the plugs, distributor cap, distributor rotor, and the timing is dead on at about 10 degrees BTC. It drives fine with the exception of the misfire that bogs the car slightly. I'm thinking it might be a sensor of some kind, but my familiarity with Toyotas and there systems is limited so I don't know what could be affecting the misfire and idle. If anyone has any suggestions that I could check out, please let me know . Thanks a lot.

Mike

I had an 86...You didn't say if you replaced the wires they could be arching causing the misfire ...idle surge sounds like a vacuum leak, change the pcv?...that car has a carb have you tried adjusting the carb to get the idle down?...it just might smooth it out......Raddman Out....

Haven't changed the wires yet, that's next on my list. The car doesn't have a carburator though. It's an AE86 with fuel injection and TVIS. I guess I need to get out there during the day and trace some vacuum lines and see if the 20 year old pieces are leaking anywhere. Thanks.

I had a 86 corolla 1.6 it had a carb...had 300,000 miles on it when I drove it to the junk yard(really cried)...didn't burn any oil but the body just fell apart floorbords, brake lines, whole underbody just rotted out, I loved that car your lucky to live where you do...no salt, I use to test for a vacuum leak(best is to use a gauge) by spraying WD40 on the hoses/fittings till I got to one that smooth the engine out for a few seconds WD40 is a wire dryer it can't hurt...just a thought, Good Luck...Raddman Out....
