Question 86 SR5 carburator problem

I just bought an SR5 yesterday for $100, it was running great (not to mention its in immaculate conditions!) i drove it home from Jacksonville to Ft. Lauderdale (320miles)

half way thru it, we stopped to give the car a rest and when we turned it back one, it seemed to loose power when i accell it...and shut down. So i discovered if i jump on and off on the pedal constatly i can get it into gear and move it...it sounds like i have a vacuum leak or valve problems. How do i deal with this?

Maybe the engine is about to go, i dont know. I checked spark plug, coil and distributor connections=OK.

i'm thinking about taking the carb off and cleaning it and check all connections etc...but first i want to know if this could be the problem.

Thanks.

i had very similar problems with my old '87 SR5 and the secondaries in the carb were not opening at all. i got a rebuilt carb from napa and it solved the problem. also check the ignition system and do a tune up, because you dont know how long it has been since one was done.

hmmmm, so it might be a carburator problem.

Today i did everything from platinum spark plugs to oil change to fuel filter. AND I STILL HAVE THE same problem exept its improved sligtly.

I'm also thinking it could be a fuel pump problem.

KNOCKLEDUSTER: What secondaries are you talking about? where did you get the carb and what did you do after you changed it?

bump i need help.

update: most of tuneup is done. The problems seems to be fuel-delivery related --> When i put the hand over the carburator so that only like 15% is open, the engine revs/'runs perfectly. Does this happend because i create a vacuum that throws more gas?

just to play around a bit, how do i adjust the air/fuel ration on this carb?

I'm still not sure if its a carburator problem, fueld prob or something with the ignition system.

thanks

I had the same problem ... does it feel like the engine's all of the sudden being starved of fuel? I changed the fuel filter and a bottle of fuel system cleaner and solved the problem.

what kind of fuel cleaning liquid...the only one i've seen is for injectors and engine treatment and stuff.

the car is working better now, apparently the secondaries were stuck, i stick my finger and moved them and its running nice now...i'll see if i find a fuel treatment thing.

Thanks

Just those regular carb/fuel injector cleaners that you dump into the gas tank.

this will be tough to find , but here it goes. there is a secondary accelerator pump on the back of the carb. its about the size of a half dollar or so, and has 3 small screws holding it to the carb, there is a single vacuum hose coming off the bottom of it... the diaphragm rips inside these. there is a vacuum hose that goes from the pump to a green switch on the pass side of car, below the carb.. follow the hose from the pump to the switch and pull it off at the switch and look if the hose is wet.. it sucks fuel when the diaphragm rips, which starves the carb and dumps gas in the intake. if u are unsure if its the correct hose, run the car and rev it while pinching off the hoses on pass side lower carb, see if it improves.

It is a easy repair to replace that diaphragm and they are only about 30-40 dollars

Whilst platinum should work, I would of gotten cheapo NGK/Denso copper plugs that they use stock in them.

good shit, i'll do this tomorow when there's light. I'll be repairing some rust i took off where the spare is and fiberglassin that stuff.

I think what you said was exactly my problem. If i put my hand over the carb and let only a bit of air, the car would run/rev nicelly. But for some reason, yesterday night, i cranked up the car (gotta crank engine constantly) and after some time checking the carb, i placed my hand ontop and almost chocked the engine and something mustve happened because the car is running nicelly now!

i'll still look around the lines and put some fuel treatment on the next fillup. but MY BABY IS RUNNING!!! it seems like the engine is weaker than my friend's SR5...maibe is because i got no muffler, its running straight out from under the car like half way...yup it sounds like a truck.

Thanks... i love you guys!!

have you checked the distributor? my 4ac's stuck at 3 degrees so its constantly weaker and slower than any other 4ac out there... it has trouble getting to 40mph and sometimes doesn't like to wake up from 5 hour naps.

nah man, this moves around easily, i can do 80mph with easy and have toped it in the mid 90s. It just feels pretty weak compared to my friend's.

Would the missing muffler be a huge factor since i'm not creating any backpressure? Also, i'm babkfiring a lot when i let the gas off/downshift/enginebreak
