corolla power steering question

Folks,

I have a power steering pump that is not working. The mechanic is telling me that the rack is leaking and needs to be replaced. Someone else told me that I could put in some power steering sealant in. My question is, has anyone tried it before? Does it work? My pump ran dry because I left my car for a few days. Can a dry pump spoil the rack too?

Will appreciate any responses.

Thanks,

00000000, running the pump dry is not good, try putting some ps fluid in it and see if it pumps enough to assist after the air gets worked out and before it pisses all the fluid out, if it does pump enough to make the assist work, its pumping. But it does have a leak or it wouldnt have been run dry, get a couple cans of brakeclean and clean the pump, ps hoses and all the mess up, fill it and get some body steering it with the motor running and look for the leak, look where the steering colum goes in to the rack, the hoses, and pop the accordian boots off and see if there is oil in them
