85 Corolla Gt-s Hatch Idling Problems

I own a 85 corolla (with stock lsd). I was running it hard and when I stopped at a red light the rpms stayed at 3k. By the time i was home it was running at 5k. I had to ride my brakes all the way home. I checked all the vacum hoses and checked the spark plugs for corrotion and the first plug was all wet and black. I think im running way too much gas. My prediction is the tps sensor or my gas pump or my ecu. Maybe a sensor??? Your replyes are appreciated. Thanx

Hmm, it probably has some sort of diagnostic port to check for errorcodes, get them pulled out by someone that should tell you whats wrong.

Maybe your throttle cable got stuck... happens a lot. Because of the AFM... it's probably not anything to do with the TPS. Even if the TPS were to go bad... it cannot mess up RPMS cause it can't bypass the AFM. The AFM can be bad... but I tend to think it may just be your throttle cable...

Hello
I didn't see it in your post, but is your check engine lite on?
If so you can pull the codes yourself.
By shorting the E and T1 on your diagnostic plug in the engine bay w/ the car off the turn the key to the on postion and the check engine lite will start flashing the codes.

Other wise check your Throttle Body and make sure it is closing all the way, could be stuck open slightly with carbon.
As far as you running that rich for your plugs to be wet:
Bad MAF, dirty injector. Many other things that could cause it but not w/ you rising idle probblem.
Is the cars idle surging?
Could be an air bubble in the coolant lines at the throttle body which would cause the idle to be all over the place.

My check engine light isnt on. And its idling smooth but real, real high. Like, when i start it it strugles to turn on (due to the overflow of gas im guessing) then it goes up to 5k like if i was revving it. I checked the throttle and its closed. Do i have maf or afm??? Im guessing thats whats making it act up. It had some wires hitting the fan once in a wile but never saw any get cut. Does a aw11 (mr2) afm or maf fit on my car? Any replyes are apreciated (been taking the bus to work for 2 weeks now) thanx.

I agree put an inline fuel pressure gauge on your car to see how many PSI you are running at idle.
If you don't have one almost any car shop should have one takes no time at all to check.
From what I have seen the AW11 MAF will not work due to there anly being 8 pins or something been so long since I treid that one I don't remember the pin count on the MAF , but they are different.

I wouldn't suspect an injector or fuel pressure as it takes both fuel and air for the engine to run. Normally if there is too much fuel at idle, the idle will drop and the engine won't make any power.
if the car has an faulty ICS (idle speed control) that may cause the problem.
Let us know what you find.

The idle will jump up and down, and the engine yes it wont make any power, but its driveable. My carbs were flooding and yet I was able to drive my car around pretty much normally. My idle got stuck at certain points when they were flooding... like 3k then 5k, I thought it was the cable, but it wanst.
