Well today while driving on the freeway one of my belts began to screech, it was obnoxious and I figured I would be able to make the trip where I was going, and home without it breaking (about 80 miles round trip). I was wrong, while leaving my girlfriends house the belt shredded. She let me drive her car home for the night (can't stay in her dorm becuase it is a private college ).
But my question is, can I drive the car 40 miles without replacing the belt or will it do significant damage?

Naw your car will not make it. Sounds like the accessory belt, so it will probably overheat and your battery will die if you drive it around with a broken belt.
I could be wrong though I am sure most corollas only have one belt.
Which belt is it that broke?
IF it's the P/S and A/C belt you have no worries.
If it's the fan/water pump and Alt. belt don't drive it untill you replace it.

Not sure exactly...but it is located on the left side of the motor right below where the radiator hose bends.

That would be your Alt and waterpump belt.
It's the one that rides closest to the motor on the crank pulley right?
Don't drive w/out fixing that belt. You don't want to over heat and warp your head.
Best of luck!! It's fairly easy to fix you Just need a to remove the outer belt place the new one on and tighten it down while pryong your alt. so the belt will be tight. then put the outer belt back on and tighten the adjuster pulley for that one and you will be good to go. I think you will need a 12mm socket a pry bar or sorts and and extension for the P/S adjuster pulley. Might want to take a 12 wrench as well since it's a little easier to get the Alt. baolt loose w/ the wrench vr's the socket tdue to room issues under the intake maifold and all.

The belt that broke was closwer to the front of the engine bay and was longer than the little belt that is connected to the alternator. However, my Brake/battery light did come on...so I am not doubting you, just making sure I am not mistaken.

Is it so hard to recognise which belt it is?
If it ain't the p/s, or a/c belt, the just change.
Hell whatever it is, just change it, it is just a bloody belt!

I know I need to change it, but my point is my girlfriends university is 50 miles away from where I live, so my car is stuck down there while I am driving her car (a fun '92 Jetta GL w/ mods), I want to be able to drive it home and change it here...

It's like a 10 minute job, why not just do it on the spot? Do you know what type of engine you have? eg. 4age, 4afe...... Just go to an auto store, buy the belt, go stick it on, and you're ready to drive. DO NOT take the chance of driving it 50 miles if you're not absolutely positive that it's not the alternator belt. Good luck.
