Question Bad Idle please advise!!!

My 2004 Corolla S is idling horridly! When i first start it it jumps to around 2000 rpms then after the engines warms and is driven it drops to around 500 rpms at idle and shakes. Does anyone know the problem? I thought it might be water in the gas but that wasn't it either. The check engine light is still on!!!

Obviously theres something wrong which is important.. Might be the O2 sensor, because the symptoms are similar that I had in the mercedes when the o2 sensor got whacked... but its only guessing if you dont have info what the ECU is saying.

I plan on getting a diagnostics read but trying to find the cheapest mech in town. I think it probably is the o2 sensor. They are around 100 bones right? Could it possibly be the EGR or the PCV valve?

no an o2 sensor in unrepairable... so you'll have to replace it.

I pulled the spark plugs and there was a little bit of carbon build-up! I cleaned them off and put them back in and really didnt get alot of results. I noticed that i could here every part of the engine working at idle. I could here the valves moving up and down is this normal? Also, as i peered down into the plug holes i noticed quite a bit of black carbon as well could this be causing a misfire?
