Question i have a perplexing problem with my corrolla

Hi, i have an ae82, 1985 corolla csx and i am having some trouble. I will be driving along and suddenly the car will start shaking and vibrating, for no reason, then the revs drop straight to zero, i can start it up again straight away, but as soon as i take my foot off the accelerator, the revs drop straight to zero. after a few minutes, i start it up again and it's back to normal. The funny the thing is that it is very intermittent, it will start happening out of nowhere, for no apparent reason. and then be fine for days or weeks, then happen again. my first thought was vacuum leak, but me and my dad inspected thouroulghy the whole system. We even took off the carby replaced the base gaskets, and a few of the vacuum lines, which werent that bad anyway. I cant think of what it could be, anyideas would be extremely helpful!

Thanks alot.
Albie

sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Is the car fuel injected? It could be your fuel injectors or you mass air flow sensor!! Check those out!! Is your check engine light coming on?

no, it's carburetted, after i posted this thread i bought and fitted anew fuel filter, but it didnt seem to have an effect, i cant find an engine check light, where should it be? on my dash i only have, parkbrake, brake, fuel, oil and charge lights. i will check the fuel lines and what is a mass air flow sensor?, do carburetted models have them? Thanks again for ur help

when this thing happens now, i usually just start her up, and keep my foot on the accelerator until the problem goes away, as long as ur foot is on the accelerator the engine wont cut out, so do u think it will get worse if i continue to drive it? or should i wait until it is fixed? i'm planning to take it on a bit of a road trip in a couple of days (i finished school! ) do u think it would be wise to take it? thanks, and any more thoughts on wat the problem could be r greatly appreciated

My advice dude..is if you have the cashage.....take it to a mechanic that you trust or someone who is experienced with these cars (doesnt hurt to ask around first) to check it out...

To me tho...where does the vibrating come from? Check idle setiing, may be too low, spark leads, plugs, dizzy etc... You and your dad sound like you know the way around an engine bay...oh and check fuel lines or have your pump flow tested..or do it yourself...

Cheers
