One time my dad took the car to work, and the morning after there was a loud grinding noise from under the hood when I pushed the gas. My dad said that happened to him too when he took the car. The strange thing is in about 2 days it went away and I never heard it again. Now, about a month later, I hear the same grinding noise, only quieter whenever the car is around 3k rpm. It's really annoying the shit out of me. It's not very noticeable, in fact, you have to listen closely, but you can tell that it happens around 3k rpm, and it sounds like the car is broken. It drives fine, seems to shift fine (I have an auto 4-spd tranny), etc. I'm pretty sure it's not any interior panels or something that are loose, and the noise is coming from under the hood. I haven't had time to pinpoint the exact place where it's coming from yet, but do you guys have any ideas what this could be?
Open it and have somebody step on the gas and see if you duplicate the grinding sound. If not have the front wheels up above the ground, lock the rear wheels (handbrake) and put the car in D. Have somebody check the car where the sound comes from.
When you jack the front wheels up make sure the wheels are not in contact with anything except the driveaxles. You'll virtually drive the car but make sure it has ample space for the wheels to turn.
No idea about what it is though. Just helping u find out where it is under the hood.
Ewwww. Could it be the timing belt or chain? Dunno which is in our cars. Ever since I took ownership of my Corolla, when the car is first put into Reverse the car shakes violently, regardless of whether my foot is on the brake or rolling back. I thought it was the timing belt/chain. Probably very different problems.
I've had the violent shaking in reverse before, but it went away for some reason. Still, though, it does shake a lot more than my dad's 2000 Camry. And also, I really don't know what it could be, as I've recently had my 75k mile service (timing belt replaced).
could be the brace that holds the exhaust in place under the block, or against the block....mine came lose and made kind of a rattling noise....Also my transmission would make a grinding noise. When it would idel in nuetral, it would make that grinding noise too, but when I pushed in on the clutch it didn't make the noise. Adding tranny grease helped the problem, but I eventually got a new tranny, b/c the differential was worn out, along with the synchronizers.
My old teg "grinds" or actually rattles at around 4k because the exhaust is too close to the rear swaybar and rattles against it. So you could just have a loose heatshield or something that is resonating.
Maybe check out the mounts too and see if they are tight, but it's likely not that.
How's your tranny fluid?

Tranny fluid should've also been changed recently, cause I took my car to the dealer for 75k service. Anyway, I'm not too worried about it since you can barely hear it, but I will check it out later and try to pinpoint the source of the noise.
I think I agree with Wolfcastle...sounds an awful lot like a timing belt tensioner or something. I have heard that these are a problem onsome Corollas. Or maybe a water pump bearing? Regards, Aaron
