Time has come.

I currently have almost 330,000km on my odometer, I'm overdue on my TB and WP job and I'm just trying to push it till december when I got my week off and don't need the car to commutte to work (I put about 750km weekly).

Now my choices have come down to whether I should do the TB/WP job or just say fuk it and do a newer 4AGE motor/trans swap. There's nothing wrong with my motor, few quirks here and there but age is starting to show. Plus now my 5th gear is popping out of place on the highway, it's fixable but that would mean probably rebuilding the transmission anyways.

I'm also looking at doing body work on it, since rust keeps coming out on my fenders, practically my fault since I neglected to spray the car last year. The floor is solid and it will get sprayed this year for sure to avoid the rust from spreading there. So when it comes down to it, my car will cost me tons of money within the next year or so in order to be brought back to a decent state.

Last choice that has been running through my mind is, should I get another car instead? I've been looking at AE101/102's 4 door, Maximas, Legacys, Imprezas, Celicas, hell even Camry's

Tough choices here.. keep my car or not.. and if not, what car to get? I'm currently looking at a 95 Maxima SE 5-speed, but not sure as to what reliability I will get from this car in terms of highway driving.

REN.. getting a newer car won't mean you'll get one without a problem. i'm an old school guy so i would keep the car and get a newer motor, maybe a 20V with a newer tranny. the body you can do later. just my .02 cents

hmmm... If I could only find a decent 20V with a tranny and a decent place to perform the swap. At least you know what I mean though.. putting almost $500 towards a Timing belt/water pump job then having the motor break due to a bad cylinder or some other engine failure wouldn't be the best thing to look forward to. I would rather find a motor to swap and put the $500 towards that.. But then I would be looking to at least another $1500 extra to finish the job.

Man, get a car that was made after 2000. That way it won't break as soon.

Or get an AE102 and be cool like me! Mine still runs like a charm... kinda. j/k

Actually the fact that my car is made before 2000 makes it less infallible to something going wrong.. our cars have barely any electronics whatsoever.. unlike your newer corollas with a sensor for everthing. I've put 120,000km on my car in the last 2 and a half years and other than your average maintenance and replacements, nothing major has ever gone wrong with my car.

Ichi, I found someone in Ottawa selling a 91 AE92 with 113km on it for around $3000. If they still have it, I might consider making the trip. Small port for summers, big port for winters... its red too!

Like it was said above, any old used car will have its share of problems.

If you buy a used car, you don't know what's going to pop up on you. In contrast, you know what problems your ride has. Because of this, I'd be more inclined to mechanicaly fix the car, not worry about the body, and just buy something much newer, say 2000 and up when you save up some more cash. Since you're driving so much every day, reliability is key.

Sounds like your car has been good to you, REN, why not be good to it? Give it the love it deserves! Everyone here is right...another car is not guaranteed to be as trouble-free as your Corolla has been. Plus, when you buy a used car you are just starting all over again...fixing other people's unwanted problems instead of just fixing your own. In fact, the guy you are thinking about buying your next car from may be typing a post similar to yours on another enthusiast forum right now!

"Should I fix all of my Maxima's problems, or sell it to someone else?"

"...my Legacy needs some work, should I fix it or sell it?"

"...so I am having some problems with my Celica..."

At least you know all of your Corolla's issues. Regards, Aaron
