I was just wondering if anyone knew about the chassis/body of the AE86. I have an '87 Corolla GT-S, with rust on all fenders... my dad says that it's probably unsafe because the underbody is probably rusted out. What is the deal with the frame/chassis? How rusted can it get? Would it be unsafe to drive? Can someone please explain all this to me, and what are the possibilities? Thanks!

why don't you jack it up and have a look under there.. if you see lots of rust and holes in the floor boards, then yeah , that's bad..

also look in the engine bay at the shock towers, firewall, etc and under the carpet in the trunk/hatch

All fenders are replaceable...even parts where you have holes in the floorpan..you can get fixed up. If they can restore old classics that burned to the ground, why can't you do the same with the AE86? it's all about what you're willing to spend...

$30,000 Canadian to restore most cars to the same conditin that they were in off the lot.
Look at my quote. see the (broken frame)? Well that was caused by rust. The car you describe sounds like my busted AE86. There are allot more AE86's around than most people belive. Look at me I own two. I could probably buy one or two every month but they wont be in the greatest shape. It is just that they are hard to find in good condition.
Hmmmm. Mabey I should buy a few every month and make a killing on parts.

the one thing that i have learned thorugh my 86 build up...is patience. wait and save up untill you find a near mint 86. trust me, you will not be disapointed spending 3 to 4 grand on a car that has basically no rust....and yes, these types do come around now and then...just keep your eyes open and know whats a good deal or not.

I remember looking at the body part catalougue at the body shop I took my car to, to see if the y had any parts for my AE92 but all I found was parts for the AE86. They have replacement quarter panels that are ready to be installed, all you have to do is cut the rusted part on the car out and weld and bolt the new panels on..

You should take it to a body shop and ask how much they'd charge you to fix it or just for the quarter panels. I'll ask my body shop for a price too..
