Blow-by on 1996 Corolla

I'm looking at a 1996 Corolla sedan with only 45,000 miles on it, one owner, competely dealer services. When the engine was cold, I started it and removed the oil filler cap slowly. Air blew out so much that my hand was covered with oil.

The owner says they never overheated the car. Could a defective PCV valve cause this, or has something damaged the rings? I'm really surprised to see blow-by so bad on a car with so few miles.

thanks,
Bryan

I guess back in the good ole days you could pop the oil cap off and get an idea of blow-by. I don't think it's applicable to OHC motors. My motor will do the same thing and it's fine.

You can either use a vac gauge to check for excessive blow-by or a compression/leak-down test. The oil cap test isn't conclusive.

Uhm thats dumb.. now why would you run without the oil filler cap? Ofcourse air blows out, there is always some blowby, besides the cams spin and you can see the gears under the oilcap, those will fling alot of oil out.

None of the cars I own have blowby. You can remove the oil filler cap and there's zero air blowing out.

Can you tell me what causes the air to blow out?
