Unhappy Fuel System and Check Engine Light Problems

I have a big problem and I've already spent $700 trying to get it fixed and its gotten me nowhere. The problem first started when i stopped at a stop light. The car began to shake and make 'puff puff puff' sound from under the hood. And it started doing it everytime i either pressed brake or took my foot off the gas pedal. I went to one shop he replaced a bunch of wires, fuel filter, oxygen sensor, after that my car completely died. I took it to another shop and they replaced one of my fuel injectors. The car is running again but it's doing the same thing with the huffing and puffing and shaking that it was doing before and now my check engine light has come on too. Has anyone had any similar problems or have any advice for me? I would really appreciate it!

-D

p.s and if it helps any its a '97 Corolla with 65,000 miles on it

Never mind the small repair shops they don't know how to properly diagnose something like that. and go on trial and error. till they nickel and dime you to death. sound like something with either the fuel or air intake. but bring it to a toyota dealership they may cost a bit more for labour but can diagnose it properly and get it fixed properly so it will be cheaper and less frustrating in the long run.

I had this happen to me on one of my old cars....a Grand Am....don't know if it would be the same problem but mine was a head gasket....

I'd say listen to XRS_JAY, no use speculating...goto Toyota and do it right or find a better mechanic....make sure to ask what ASE's they have (even at the dealer)....these are important so you don't have a rookie working on a car that he should not even touch....

Yes that is a very good Idea make sure they are certified to work on and diagnose the problem properly, Toyota Dealerships are required to have at least one Toyota Master technician on staff. or more depending on size of dealership and Service dept.

Thanks, thats what I ended up doing. It's at the Toyota dealership now. They haven't looked at it yet but I'm hoping when they do they'll finally figure out whats wrong with it.
