Why cut the springs? I know he said he's got money issues but this is a bad idea if you have money issues. Cutting springs will put un-necessary pressure on the shocks/struts and you'll be replacing those VERY often....there is a guy in my town that did it to his Civic, he thinks it's the hottest shit on the planet, but not when he has to get new shocks each month. Spend the money up front for a good set of springs and you'll be happier that you did....

have you ever driven a car with a cut spring?

my strlet has a cut spring from an AE86 and the last time it was on the track, everyone said it was handling like on rails. so don't talk to me how bad it is and that. what do you think we were doing 10 years ago? we don't have the aftermarket support back then and i know there's tons now, but try finding one for a KEXX. most aftermarket AE86 springs runs around $300CAD a set. tell me a good cheap aftermarket spring that can make my car handle excellent then i'll shut up and get it.

^^^I never said it was a totally bad idea...but he said he was having trouble with money....and having to buy shocks once a month is NOT a good thing no matter how much you got and I never said it would be cheap either...but spending $300 once is a HELL of a lot better than spending (a guess) $2000/year on shocks because you cut the springs....I was just tryign to give him another point of view...

Have I ever driven a car with a cut spring....YES...WORST MOST UNCOMFORTABLE RIDE IN MY LIFE....I felt like I was on a boat it ROCKED so much...because, guess what? THE SHOCKS WERE RUINED....

*edit* oh yeah and since it is NOT 10 years ago and the after market is out there with this stuff....again I ask why cut them?

buddy.. if you have a set of shocks that needs replacing, no matter how good the springs you put, YOU STILL NEED TO REPLACE THEM, period! i don't really get what you're trying to say. according to you, if you cut the spring then for sure that the shocks are gonna go right away? is that what you're saying? but it's still gonna go if you put an aftermarket w/c is stiffer. by cutting them you get a little stiff and a little low ride w/o spending any money. and when i say CUT doesn't necessarlly mean cut all the way down. i don't know what that guy did in the civic why he keeps replacing them but seems to me he didn't do it properly. replacing the shocks is not a performance thing, it is a maintenence issue no matter what you say!

did ever think that maybe, just maybe it was just coz of the shocks being shot?

where can you get an aftermarket part for a KEXX? which companies are you talking about? as far as i know, there's a couple in the US but if you're not aware, they cost a lot. so tell which aftermarket companies are you talking about!

btw, just so we're clear.. i'm not enforcing anyone to cut their springs. i just gave a quick reponse according to financial reason the poster said. i was in the same boat and that's what i did. but being in Malaysia, maybe there are local peroformance companies that can make you a set w/o having to pay a lot. most generic aftermarket springs are made in Asia anyways, try that.

Dude, pull your head outta your ass and re-read my first post....CUTTING SPRINGS PUTS UN-WANTED STRAIN ON THE SHOCKS THAT THEY WERE NOT MEANT FOR....

SO what does that tell you....

If you CUT SPRINGS, no matter what the height, and have GOOD shocks, you will be fine for a while...but drive it for a few weeks and tell me how good your shocks are compared to what they WOULD be if you bought lowering springs.
Yes shocks will go if you put on stiffer springs...eventually. But if you cut the springs then they will deteriorate ALOT FASTER....get it....and you will be paying MORE MONEY in the long run due to your "cost saving" tip....Since when you cut springs, your shock will now bottom out over every bump since there is no spring there to impede that...

"did ever think that maybe, just maybe it was just coz of the shocks being shot?"

Umm...yeah isn't that what I said.....how's that re-reading coming along?

I've known alot of people that have tried this and they have ALL said the same thing...."I should've never cut my springs"

I just don't want this guy to go and do what ur saying and be disappointed...like I said...I was just trying to give another point of view....you turned it into this....

buddy, i re-read your post over and still the same.

ok, first off.. if you put ANY aftermarket or a cut spring on an OEM shock, you'll put "unwanted strain taht they were not meant for" on the said shock. why coz it was just meant for stock suspension (sprung and height) right? this is the reason why a lot of people are spending so much money on performance shocks. do you agree? now read the following closely... the reason i said to cut the spring is to get some stiffness in his suspension without spending any money. it's a quick fix 'till he gets some money and get a better suspension. i am not saying that everyone should do this, like i said a quick fix for some guys that don't have money. are you still following? ok then let's move on..

like i said my suggestion was for a quick fix. and i think you should be the one re-reading you post. this is what i said.. "Have I ever driven a car with a cut spring...." and here's your response.."YES...WORST MOST UNCOMFORTABLE RIDE IN MY LIFE....I felt like I was on a boat it ROCKED so much...because, guess what? THE SHOCKS WERE RUINED...." so, this is what i say to you right now and i hope you're still following... spring is just a half of a suspension, the other half is the shock. try putting a good shock on that cut spring, you won't rock as much. do you see what i'm getting?

again like i said, it was for a quick fix! and btw, my cut spring was supported by a TRD shock and stock AE86 fronts. the suspension is at least 5-6 years old and still going!

how can you be disappointed when you're not really spending any money? and please don't use the f@#king.. "coz he's gonna spend $2000 replacing shocks" comment. with the shock he has right now, even if he doesn't cut his spring when the time comes he's still gonna need to replace it.

fyi, i'm not turning it into anything. when you suggested to spend the money on aftermarket springs, i just laugh. coz it's not that easy to get an aftermarket spring for his KEXX. the only company i know of is TRD Japan and finding one of those set is not easy and cheap.

so your suggestion of JUST replacing... that's a GREAT suggestion but isn't that gonna kill his shocks as well coz it's doing what it wasn't meant to do?

and if you can, please stop with the "Dude, pull your head outta your ass" comments when you post suggestions like the one on top. now, until you post any company that has aftermarket suspension parts for a KE70, i think we should just obth shut-up and let the guy do his own thing! PEACE.

oh and just so you know, the drfit king himself (Keiichi Tsuchiya) had a cut spring when he was learning how to drift back in the day. he said it himself on the Drift Bible video!

I see that....but by cutting springs, you'll kill those shocks much faster than if you went with an aftermarket spring. That's what I was saying....just got a little of track....

I still disagree with the quick fix notion. If he does this, it seems to me, that he'll be deeper in the hole than if he just saved his $$$$ and bought a nice aftermarket spring/shock setup. Mainly because we/he don't know what condition his shocks are in right now...so by cutting the springs he may end up killing his shocks in a matter of weeks or worse, days....and hafta spend more $$$ doing maintenance rather than modding. Do you see?

I see this as well, but again...how long will that new shock last on a cut spring? I'd say not too long....

For this I'd hafta say that you are lucky...of all the people I know that have done this, they have not had shocks last that long...at most 6 months due to the shocks having to do double duty....this is my experience.

I meant disappointed in how it would handle. I have Eibachs in mine and they make it handle like a dream but it's a VERY rough ride at times....how bad will cut springs be?

Oh and because he'd be spending $2000 replacing shocks

I never said it would be easy or cheap, just cheaper than cutting the springs in terms of the amount of shocks he'd end up buying in the long run, IMO.

As far as my 'Ass' comment...I am sarcastic ALL the time...sometimes it comes out at the wrong times....sorry for that....

And just because it is called the "Drift Bible" doesn't mean you hafta take it as the "Word of God".....I don't care what the drift king does or did back then, he's only one man, not everyone. How many other drifters from this beginning era DIDN'T do this? You'd never know because they didn't make a "Drift Bible".....but think about this.....when did he start drifting? Back when these aftermarket parts were almost completely un-available?...if he had the option back then, I'm pretty sure he would've chosen to not cut em and go with an aftermarket set...just my opinion....

just to share my experience.. i had cut springs in my rolla before... i cut my B+G springs coz the front was a bit too high... lasted me more than a year on stock shocks... considering our road conditions back here i'd consider it a miracle that the shocks kept up for that long.

He does say in the drift bible that it was unsafe to cut the springs, but they were young and dumb.

AE86 parts should fit on the front end of the KE70.

Cutting the springs isnt exactly detrimental IF.. you dont do it so that you cut the stock spring to lower the car. There isnt that many coils to begin with. But cutting springs to fit springs from ANOTHER car can be done. Lets say like Mercedes springs in an old Celica or Lada springs in a old TE71 corolla. Those wont kill the shocks either, because you're not running the risk of bottoming out.
