Yes and no. They are priced independantly based on market conditions and exchange rates in each country.

i'm curious on how you came up with this? let me ask my sister, she's at StatsCan. hehehehe!

i know that in Cali it's much cheaper to buy new cars bcoz of low monthly premium and insurance according to a friend of mine who lives there. they wanted i guess the old junkers to get out of the road.

a major reason for price difference is the difference in each countries dollar on the global market...USD is worth more then the CAD...therefore toyota can afford to sell cars for less in the US then in Canada...

Sorry - not true.

Each Toyota division in Canada and the US negotiates with the plant to come up with a per-unit price.

These prices are typically based on what the "market" will bear. The Canadian market will not accept a CDN $20,000 Corolla....but that's about what it would have cost to buy one from the US when considering the exchange rate, etc.

Want proof? Price a bunch of vehicles at Toyota.com and Toyota.ca...add in the exchange rates and see what happens.

Two years ago, the US Corolla @ $13,000 was a rip compared to the CDN Corolla at $16,000 when you considered the 40% diff in dollar.

I went to a Lexus dealership and the salesman told (back then Canadian dollars was only 0.60 c US or something) me that a number of their customers were buyers from the US since adding in the import tax still worked out to be cheaper for Americans. With the Canadian Dollar worth almost 0.85c US, I doubt it would be cheaper in Canada anymore.

I've actually noticed that the price of used cars and car parts per say.. is cheaper in Canada than it is in the US. This is factoring in exchange rates and stuff.. so a $50 US part in an american dealer will cost you about $50 CDN in a canadian dealership... very weird.. but its true. Also I've noticed AE92's going for about $1500-2000 US and the same car will be worth $1500-2000 CDN in the Canadian market.

Canada

Yes there was a big issue with that about 2-3 years ago....around the time the Cdn dollar was crap. You might remember a case where Chrysler announced that they would no longer allow their vehicle warranty plans to be transferred to other countries (or transferred without a fee). Honda did the same thing. Toyota thought better of this because it puts undue pressure on the customer who might just have been transferred there. (Kudo's Toyota!)

Anyways that practice was to hopefully stop the flow of vehicles from being purchased in Canada and shipped to the US. It was virtual piracy - and lots of little companies spawned just to do this practice (and a few dealers I might add )

If memory serves me correct, Toyota was having a huge supply problem with Sienna in the US...so people were pillaging the Canadian supply as well. Even with the exchange, tax, cost to convert the dash, etc. it was still worth it in the end.

Long ans short - the Canadian market cannot support the same price point per vehicle than in the US. So cars are usually cheaper here.

i'm not going to disagree with you bro, because i don't know enough about the international automotive market but i will stick with the value of a countries curency must have something to do with influencing the price of an automobile.

Canada

Exchange rates have some impact...but it doesn't explain the "sometimes" hugh disparities between vehicle prices after exchange rate differences are removed.

Alas, when we become the 51st State, all will be the same.
