Please Help with my carburator!

I have a 1982 3TC engine, corolla that when I start it I get alot of GAS SMELL on the exhaust, and the engine shakes a little, when the car warms up to normal temp, everything works normal, Sometimes I get some "gas smoke" comming out of the exhaust, not oil smoke. If anytone can help me I would appreciate it. THANK YOU!

This may sound strange, but you should make sure the ignition(plugs, wires, cap, rotor) is all in top shape before attempting to do anything with the carb.

I dealt with a similar problem with a 3f engine on a fj60, the mixture set screw at the base of the carb had moved, throwing everything out of whack, to adjust it properly screw it in all the way and go back 2 1/2 turns, that will bring really close to the ideal mixture, this screw is most of the times at the base of the carb facing the manifold, try that, see if it fixes your problem.

flap closes in the morning, and after it warms up it opens, might this be the problem?

that's the carb choke flap, it closes when the engine is cold and opens back up when it warms up, it decreases the amount of air going in the engine so it warms up quicker with a richer mixture, the screw I'm talking about is not in the manifold itself, it's on the base of the carburetor, and is the only thing that regulates the amount of fuel going in the engine, like I said, screw it all the way, and back out 2 1/2 turns, you will be able to tell it runs right by the change in pitch when the engine idles.

I always try and count how far I'm turning adjustment screws, that way I can put it back where it was if needed.
Also, if you try any adjustment to the choke flap, go easy,it's pretty sensitive.
