additives are shit, dont use them. It should be ok if it only lasts few secs, thats when the engine is getting oil pressure buildup and it has hydraulic lifters that rely on oil pressure.

I have a 03S Rolla also at 40k and I have heard that sound a few times in cold weather also, it only lasts a few seconds and I figure once the oil hits it stops(Pensoil 5-30W)...If it starts to last longer I would get it checked immediatly...my worry is something that started this winter, if I don't let it warm up enough and put it in drive I have been getting a vibration/rattle sound coming from my serpetine belt area. I had a friend look under the hood while it did this but couldn't pin point it only the general area..also have you noticed any drop in gas millage? the first summer I owned the car I was getting 400-450 miles(a few times over 500) to a fill up...now I'm lucky to get 350 at city/highway driving ....Raddman

thanks for the reply. i've not noticed any other noises. my gas mileage has dropped a little, i live in a mountainous region so the best i got was about 38-40
now maybe 35-36, i think alot may have to do with worn plugs, dont think you can go 120k as suggested before a tuneup, what do you think?

Maybe its because of winter time? Cold engine runs richer longer, before it heats up.

I think that our cars have Toyota Platinum-Iridium plugs which they say don't have to be replaced till after 100k but like you said that might be stretching it...I would/going to pull one out and check it every once in a while especially if you begin to notice any problems...they cost about $9.00 each. Also they say that unlike earlier Toyotas we don't have a timing belt we have a chain..which is good but even a chain can get worn and stretch.... ....Raddman

Yes the Corolla now runs a steel roller chain for the timing instead of a traditional belt, it is mainenance free and all the pins are plated with chrome to enhance the life spand. And yes a chain will still wear and stretch but not at 40k. Could be plugs even though they are iridium tiped, could also be because of driving conditions and yes cold weather will effect the fuel economy of the engine especially if it is not being driving for great lengths of time.
