Canada How do you clean brakes?

I did a search on how to clean brakes, but found nothing other than people selling clean brakes!

So, here 's the question to you, how do you clean brakes? what do you use as cleanser? do you have to take the brake apart?
thanks!

I didnt think there was much in there to clean. Are you talking the discs or drums? The only think I could think of is taking it all apart and degreasing it.

If you want to clean off the brake dust. You can try using water mixed with dish wash detergent. No Chemicals, inexpensive, and not as bad for your health as vapors from chemical cleaners.

The best dish wash detergent to use to scrub those nasty calipers is....DAWN....

Or you can go with the all time favorite:

..and if you can wait a little while longer...now there's...

Watch out with brake cleaner though if you are trying to clean the brakes on or around the car. I thought it would be a good idea to spray some on the calipers on my monte carlo with the wheels still on. It left streaks in the clear coat on the wheel and also discolored some non painted aluminum. I've used brake cleaner to clean a lawn mower carb and it bubbled up the paint on the lawn mower, be careful because it likes to soften, discolor, and eat paint.

Cool

Brake cleaner. It's a very harsh petrolium based solvent.

There really isn't a reason to clean the rotors. Any time you hit the brake pedal, wala! they're clean! I'm not in to painting stock calipers. They're soooo small who wants them to stand out? They wind up just looking silly, especially when you have rims on the car. That's even worse.

Now I've painted my last to sets of brembo rotors with high-temp silver on the rotor hats, and the surface of the rotors. It makes a world of differance beause it keeps the surfaces that the brake pads can't scrub shit off from rusting.
