engine or tranny problem

The info on the Toyota goes as follows 1989 Toyota Corolla SR5 1.6L 3 speed overdrive plus manual overdrive carbureted. The problem goes as follows; at around 60kms the car starts to "buck" like not getting fuel. Then once past that stage it starts to rev up but speed does not really increase. The other day the problem got worse, as I was stuck in a parking lot and with just the rocking of the car from D to R to get unstuck the car kept staling, making me believe the problem is fuel related. All problem seem to be when the car is put under load. However the car starts and idles fine. please help

Check ignition components. Could be bad coil. Unless you don't have enough tranny oil or broken torque convertor.

Along the lines of ignition, check the vacuum advance. If the vacuum advance is leaking air gets sucked into the intake manifold or carb depending where it is hooked up. this causes a lean surge and the loss of some ignition advance will be reduced power.

That sounds more like a fuel problem to me.. does the car stall? I used to have an old carb'd civic, but it was 5spd. It used to do the exact same thing, turns out the fuel filter was so clogged that eventually it just gave up and fuel started to gush out. After the filter was changed the car ran even better.

If the filter doesn't change anything, then chances are the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

Cool

Check the tranny fluid.

It's probably years past time for being flushed, and more than likely is somewhat low.
