Engine Running Problems

I can start the car with the clutch down, but it shuts off shortly after i let the clutch go. I can rev and everything else when the clutch is held down, but no matter what i do (put it in gear, leave it in neutral, or give it gas) it shuts off a little bit after the clutch is let go.

Can anyone Help?

Something is binding the clutch.

I bet when you step on the clutch you have to floor it. Releasing it slightly will shut it off. If so I'd check the release bearing or spring, but since those are internal I'd have it changed all the same. You could also ask if the clutch plate and/or clutch disc could be going. Others can enlighten you more, I only know so much.

But I'm pretty sure it's not the shifter because you mention that even in neutral or in gear the car still shuts down.

it doesn't move at all, even in gear, as soon as i tap the gas without holding the clutch, the car shuts off. although doing nothing after releasing the clutch will also cause the car to shut off after a second or two.

a friend of mine mentioned something about there being a switch for the clutch... think this could be a problem too?

OK 2 simple tests here, get a couple buddies and some rags, get in the car and put it in 1st gear, motor off and hold the clutch down, they should be able to push the car, now let the clutch out while still in 1st, they should not be able to push the car, then pop the hood and get your bigger buddy to get the rags and grab the fan belt, pull the e brake up hard and put it in 1st gear, push the clutch in and see if he can turn the motor over, he should be able to, now let the clutch out, now he should not be able to turn it, now take it out of gear, now he should be able to turn the motor and it wont matter if the clutch is pushed or not. These tests will verify or eliminate something in the trans locked up
