88 Corolla, about emissions.

its not passing and im in that 36 day period (just got the safety)

anywho the problem is HC PPM, its through the roof (like 300) so im thinking its running rich, i replace the 02 sensor, replace the oil, goes down to like 280.

I think its a missfire, its definetly running rough and sometimes the HC is saying like 600, up to even 2000, im thinking it has to be a missfire?

I dont know if it burns oil (doesn't seem so at all) its got 211K, and compression is 90 psi across the board.

I sprayed the spark plug wires with water and the car turned off. so i replaced them but the HC is still up there. and the miss didnt go away (i hadnt bougth the wires yet, i was at work and we had them in the back so i just threw em on and threw em off)

What would cause a missfire in this engine? the plugs look really new aswell. Can somebody tell me what else to replace/look for, i dont want to spend any more money on this thing (safety wasn't easy).

Yeah i bought a big ass lemon. Also this thing has a hell of a time starting, takes like 15 minutes, im gonna kill the starter if i keep going like this.

also what engine is it? its DOHC, with one cam gear and carburated with an O2 sensor (can someone tell me why?) 16 V, i think its a 4AF?

did you check the plugs, and distro? check the pcv valve, also checking the egr and giving it a little cleaning would help a bit .. also make sure your cat is clean

Wow...90psi eh? I think the minimu is 140psi. That could be a problem. Does it go up if you add oil to the cylinders? Looking at new rings then...

Have you replaced the cap and rotor?

Poor HC readings means you need a new CAT. You look at CO to determine whether it's rich or lean. Do a basic tune-up and get a new cat. The popping may be caused by timing... a new cat should be able to clean up a bit of the popping, but if your HC is reading upwards of 2000, which is MAX for many sniffers, chances are your timing is a bit off.

yeah, 90 is a bit low....... if you were located closer i have a spare 4afe block with crank & pistons still in it.....

however, that doesn't seem like a huge reason to not pass emissions.... when i had a 4afe i passed like it was nothing...... it is carburated of course, you might want to adjust the fuel going in......

Low compression will also cause a mis-fire. Basically whats happening is your getting too much raw fuel into the exhaust system. The Catalytic converter can burn most of it off to a certain point. If it has never been replaced its probably not working at 100% efficiency, but I would get the engine running smoothly before changing the converter.

w0rd..my money is on low compression. Low compression = low volatility = ineffecient/incomplete burn = bad emissions = no stickers = ticket = welfare.
