Ok to drive without PS Pump?

I've got a problem where I'm losing alot of Power Steering fluid from my steering rack, and my Mechanic's currently on holidays. I dont really see the point in replacing the fluid as whatever I put in is gone within a tank of fuel.

Would it be ok to disconnect the PS pump by removing the belt until I can get the car to the mechanics? The extra stiffness doesnt really worry me as I dont race around everywhere, so is there any chance of causing further damage to the rack or pump by doing this?

Paarking may be difficult... but I do remember my old minivan which had frequent PS failures. If it is for a ahort while, I am sure it would be fixed as soon as the mechie is back.

You cannot damage the pump or the rack by manually turing the stering wheel.

Cool

Well considering if you have an early '90's or older the fact that the fan is powered by PS, along with a few other misc. things. I wouldn't move the car.

I say disconnect the belt first if you want to disengage it. However the steering box would lose the fluid as well, since it's designed to have fluid you could damage it in the process.

Tighten all hoses first. If leak persists, park it for now. Rather than park it next time because of a steering failure due to lack of PS fluid. Just helping

If the only thing associated with that belt is the PS, it won't hurt anything as long as the fluid isn't still leaking.
Been there.

um, generally clutch fans are on waterpumps......

neither of my cars have PS... they're fine..... my corolla even has a Power rack and i just looped the lines

it will get progressively more difficult to turn the wheel as you lose more fluid, though
