hey, bought a corolla of a mate a while back.. it doesnt run real good.. but managed to drive it home, about 20 mins (yes, car is unregistered, no comments please)
i dont know any specs on the car.. i think that its a KE55, about 79'..? the interia is in really good nick, all original, no rust that i know of..
It hasnt been started since i drove it home, about 2 mths ago now.. it will turn over but wont get going... the oil is kinda brown.. haha.. might be a headgasket..? any way, i thought that it would make a cool project car.. i might rebuild the engine in there, would that be worth doing.. i really know nothing about corolla's.. or try swap something else in there..
the engine bay looks pretty bad.. but ill flush all the fluids, replace the coil, and some wires etc.. a nother mate has a few corolla wreaks, and hes polishing a head atm, so ill try and get this one going eventually..
My dad had one back then and he set it up with a "2TG" engine, it was so damn clean I could eat off the valve cover. The funny memory I have of it was the speedo went past the max speed all the way around (clockwise) and back to zero!
You're on the right track changing all fluids and giving it a full servicing/tune up. I would also change the weatherproofing and any rubber parts that have dried off. Glad to hear there's no rust. My dad sold his other Corolla (1978 SR) because of leaks.
from the looks of it, i'd say you have a KE30 4dr. sedan with a 3K motor. but the KE30s are only from '74-'77. are you sure about the year being a '79? the reason i said that it's a KE30 and not a KE55 is bcoz of the headlights. the KE55 has a round headlights, you have square ones. unless the previous owner swap the headlights. if the ownership paper say that the car is between '78-'81 then you're right that's a KE55E but with a swap front end and it should have a 4K motor instead of the 3K i said earlier.
btw, in regards to swap options, unless you wanna go hardcore restoration, i'd suggesto go EFI like a 4A-GE. but if you're going to old school car shows with this baby, then go with a T-type motor. harder to find but can get lots of points from the judges having a correct year motor. 2TGs are really good option, mate it with a 3T bottom end then you have a 1.8L Twincam beast! goodluck!

well the engine says 4K-C on the side of the head.. i have no idea what year it is.. thats just what i was told it was when i bought it.. i tried to decifer(?) the vin no. but i just got confused...
i probably wont be going full hardcore on it, like entering in shows or whatever..
How about a 2/3RZ swap? More challenging, but very cool and not too pricey for parts. I don't think anything worth swapping will fall into those mounts, unless you find that guy over at KP61.net who was supposed to make K->A series swap mounts, in which case, Silvertop 20V 4AG.
You need spark, fuel and compression. Start there. All oil is brown LoL! Worry when the coolant is brown.

K-series motors were good during it's time but nowadays parts are just getting harder and harder to find. you're better of with a newer EFI motor. when i got my first KP61 the first thing i threw was the 4K motor. the maximum hp of any K motor i've seen in NA form is about 150whp. it's a 5K hybrid. but the amount of money spent on the motor is like getting a late gen 3SGE. go figure!

kinda need some help.. i drained the oil... as i was undoing plug, clear liquid was runnign out... then turned to a milky brown...
oh and... how do i drain the coolant...?
i read somewhere that it there is a plug on block, near the oil filter.. well i undid a nut that wasnt holding anything next to oil filter, under cyl 1 (I think.. it was the one closest to the firewall) and nothing.... ..... when i squeeze the coolant hose's it feels like there is a layer of something breaking in there, i can hear it cracking.... is this bad news...? and in the radiator i can see bits of brown flakey things... and how do i really drain the coolant...?
Thanks

The cracking feeling is RUST that's formed a layer. I would replace the hoses. Looks like it's rusting inside the radiator too ("bits of brown flakey things").
There should be a drain **** somewhere. If not, I'd remove the hoses (since you might replace them anyway) and run some water through it. A garden hose could do it well. Look around the radiator. If there is anything jutting out, check to see if you can remove it or if it's a plug of some kind.
On a side note, I personally like squeezing that rusted out radiator hose. Squeezed it til nothing was heard, then flushed it really well until the water was clear. You might also want to run some sort of flushing agent--Prestone sells a good number of those if you have it there in Australia.
