who lives in california and can handle engine swaps and pass emissions
i wanna get a blacktop 20V motor here in california
i read somewhre on CA emission websites saying tha s long as the engine
is the same size and for about the same car, it should pass.
what to do...
also what kinda times can i get in a 7A-FE auto, probably converting to M/T if it doesn't cost an arm and a few legs
A 20V is not a legal motor swap. It's not that the engines must be the same size, the engine must have come from a same year or newer car and must have all smog accesories (CAT, EGR, etc...) The engine must have been available for sale in the United States, so the 20V is illegal. That's basically the only options you have if you wanna do it legally. There's no way to make a 20V legal.

I'd advise against swapping for a 4A engine. It won't give you enough torque to pull your AE102, even with the s/c I think. Besides, why swap in an older engine?
Go ahead and put a supercharger on this one if you're that bent on serious engine modifications. Or do a conversion to make a 7A-GE, or GZE. Although all of those things I just said cost a hell of a lot more than $800.
Also a tranny swap for a C52 (manual transmission) would be pointless. You'd gain a few foot-pounds of torque. Whoopee, you just spent $1000 but your car is still slow. With a tranny swap there are too many parts to worry about and it's too expensive. It would be cheaper to get another AE102 that's already manual.
Seriously man, the AE102 is no sports car. I know you can do crazy shit to it like any other car, but from my point of view its just not worth the investment cause you still won't keep up with the MR2s and Integra Type Rs. Take that tranny swap/engine swap money and put it toward a new car with some sports background. The AE86 was a sports car, but putting a 4A-GE into your AE102 won't make it into one.

I disagree. People can do whatever they want to their cars. Most people don't have the time to bother with multiple cars, project cars and such, so if he wants a little power upgrade... go for it. So what if the car doesn't have a sporty concept or a sporty background. As for the 5 speed swap... again, maybe it's just his prefrence... you're free to express your opinion, but try not to put him down for it. As for the 4AGZE, let me remind you, they were produced until 1994, so they're not exactly "old" engines. He still has the problem of swapping in a motor from an "older" car, in this case, 88-89 MR2 S/C, so this swap still wouldn't be legal, but hey, the engine is good... it'll make plenty of power to move an AE102. The 4AGZE makes much more torque than anything the AE102 corollas came with stock... so what's this torque argument? Those Corollas weren't that heavy (2500-2800 pounds maybe). As far as smog goes Jake... there are smog shops that will hook you up. They'll just want incentives...

I agree with Kwanza. People can do whatever they want with their cars. I drive a 92 with a carbed 5A motor (1500cc) and smoke SiR's running B16A1 engines with rated 160bhp and 100 lb-ft of torque in the 1/4 mile.
And how is it possible to gain torque from a tranny? maybe get better time slips with close-ratio trannies but increase torque?
7A block, 4AG 20V pistons, 4AG 20V head. I really doubt ukraineboy know what he's talking about anyway. It's not the easiest build to do because it's no different than doing a normal 4AGE 20V swap, and there's some custom stuff to do. I was considering this project (7AGE 20V) for a long while instead decided to stay with the 1.6. The 1.8 displacement advantage doesn't mean a whole lot unless you can get some stronger rods (pauter 7AFE rods) and spin the 7A block like you can the 4AG...
