Howdy Fellers,

Former Toyota Technical Center engineer here. Just wanted to check in, check my avatar, and start getting/giving info about my Corolla. Questions forthcoming.

Let's see if the sig. works now. I had made it much too long.

In addition to the now smaller (cheesie) signature I wanted to say that I put a G-Tech in the Corolla for a while. I was able to muster a 0 - 60 best time of 7.59 secs. It also measured 135 h.p. at the tires according to the G-Tech. It all sounded reasonable to me. A little quicker than I would've suspected ... but I did launch with the tires slighty spinning/chirping (best launch) and only had to shift 1 time and hit 60 mph just before shifting to 3rd (the G-Tech stops automatically when it determines 60 mph). None of my buddies believe me, but heck the car only weighs 2,500 lbs.

I'm not quite satisfied with the fuel economy ... so far I've only been able to max it out at 38 m.p.g. hand measured. And that was a very conservative cruise on the interstate at 70 m.p.h. I was expecting to squeak into the 40's.

Now that I'm V1 equipped though, my cruise control usually gets set on 85 m.p.h. so forget the fuel economy but at least its still in the 30's.

Next step: To get rid of the Goodyear Integritys, they are NFG.

135 at the wheels sounds awfully high, unless u've got some major work done to the car. especially considering u've only got 130 at the fly.

O/T: falnfenix, what happened to the cav? i thought u just got that, i remember u being really excited about it on vvti, and then everyone flamed u, lol.

Are you talking about the TTC in Ann Arbor? I don't know if any others exist. I've applied for a job at the TTC so many times. At one point I actually spoke to your head of HR at the time. I believe her name was Brenda Lowrie. But I eventually found a job elsewhere, Unfortunately my current job is an hour drive, whereas I live a few miles away from ttc. And I'm sure working for Toyota is more rewarding than working for a supplier. But oh well. I'm gaining valuable experience right now.

captainzib - Yes, I'm talking about TTC in Ann Arbor. It was a great place to work. I jumped ship to Hyundai Tech Center for the 'ground floor' advantage, and also because my wife and I are originally from GA ... I've taken a permanent position for the Tech Center in Ann Arbor but residing in AL at the new plant Hyundai is building. Now my wife and I are equidistant from our hometowns and both of our families get to see our 2 sons that were born in MI. I'd rather work for TTC, but considering location and the ground floor opportunity I took a chance. The weather in AL is friggin' awesome. I feel sorry for those I left in MI.

02RSX - I'm telling you what the G-tech said. I cannot vouch for the accuracy, although it seemed right on when I put it in my truck. I've have done no major work to the car. There's really only one thing I've done to it which I feel has made a slight difference, but I'll keep that little secret to myself.

Yeah Michigan's weather sucks. It took me an extra half hour to get to work today which normally only takes me 1 hour. TTC is only a few minutes drive from my house. I so wish I could work there. Location is nice, plus I love Toyotas. At least I love some of them. I kinda wish Toyota wouldn't kill off all of it's sports cars in NA. It's too bad that trucks are way more popular here than fun to drive sports cars.

JyRO: how much power Toyota claim for the 2004? 135? You got no tranny lost? Com'on you're an engineer. What weight you use on the G-Tech? Probably you put in too much. You need to use crub weight.

Pineapple - I think the brochure advertises 135 hp, which would be flywheel. I did not say, 'my car puts 135 to the tires.' I said G-Tech showed 135 to the tires, and later that I cannot vouch for accuracy of the G-Tech. I realize there is drivetrain loss ... duh. I had/have access to a scale at the tech center which was accurate to less than a pound. I forget the exact weight, but it was in the 2,500 lb range with nearly an empty tank, then I added my body weight. The result of those 2 numbers was programmed into the G-Tech. Then left with the G-Tech and made my runs in a flat level area.

Yes, I'm an engineer. So let me ask you guys something, since you guys seem hell-bent to make a point that I have to be wrong. Who is to say that the 135 h.p. rating in the brochure is the gospel? For one thing, is Toyota an adventurous, big risk taking company ... or maybe more of a conservative company? I know which ... you tell me. Secondly, have you ever heard of manufacturing tolerances etc?

I witnessed (back in the day) two 900RR Hondas racing with 2 guys who looked like twins but at least brothers (same build, same weight, same height). One 900RR would waste the other every single time. It was about a 20 mph to terminal velocity race and it looked like a 600cc vs. 900cc race. The loser 900RR owner took it more graciously than I would, but still was never satisfied with his bike. His was not slow. He knew bikes and it ran well. It was just not equivalent to the other.

With that said, are you guys going to say 135 hp to the tires is not possible? My opinion is: I would tend to think the G-Tech read a bit high, but not substantially. Maybe I took delivery of a 'loose' one, or maybe Toyota was a bit conservative on their ratings. Who knows? I'm only telling you guys what the G-Tech said.

Jump to my truck, it dyno'd at 305 rwhp (665 tq). I put the G-Tech in it, and the numbers from the G-Tech were within 2% of that. The truck is Cummins powered and although its only mildly modified compared to other Cummins trucks, the modifications are fairly large compared to gasser engines. One caveat - the truck is still slow ... it weighs 7,130 lbs with nothing but fuel, and its a manual tranny so I loose boost at every shift, it does run in the 8's 0 - 60 mph. Nuff said.

No offend
Since its an Toyota, tolerances is tight. Engine moving parts are 0.0005" or less. You won't get 10% different in HP, less then 5% I'll say. One guy dynoed a XRS and got less then 165HP, its in here somewhere.
Not saying you lie or something but posting "questionable" info.
As an engineer, you need to question the result since its look off. You can't just say this is what I got and I'm not questioning it.

Why do you guys want to imply whatever you want into what I've said. As far as questioning it, the only reason I haven't questioned it is because its in the ballpark and personally, I don't give a sh1t about it. It only a Corolla. I was curious to see what I could get out of it, and left it at that. However, having worked in a concept-to-production environment and having seen with my own 2 eyes normal production variations, including engines, I will say that I don't agree with you. I think 10% variation is feasible.

I'm sure Toyota's 'target' range of output is much tighter than that, but no manufacturing process is perfect. In the case of the 1.8L Corolla engine we're talking about 13.5 h.p. Do I think its possible to test one engine and get ~142 hp, and another one and get ~128 hp. I think its possible. On the same day, not likely, but I think its possible.

My own opinion as to how much power I think my particular car puts to the tires ... 126 to 130. But 135 is in what I consider 'the neighborhood' since all I'm talking about is a friggin Corolla anyway. All I really cared about was that I got it for $14.2k (Toyota employee discount). I'm going to miss that discount.
