Cool Problems with rear wheels/tires.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and I apologize if this question has been answered in previous threads. I have a 1995 Corolla and I just put on it a set of 205/50-R16 tires and I'm not sure what is the offset for the wheels. I got the wheels/tires for free from my roommate. My problem is the rear tires are grinding the fenders whenever I hit a tiny bump or a manhole. Worse still, when I have passengers in the backseat, the tires will keep on grinding even when I'm driving on a flat surface. This only happens with the rear tires; I have no problems with the front tires whatsoever. I'm thinking of replacing the stock springs with much stiffer aftermarket ones but I'm not sure if it's going to make any difference. My question is: Are the stock springs too soft and need to be replaced or the wheels/tires are simply too big for the car? My roommate speculates that it's probably has something to do with the car's rear wheel offset being too short. The treads on the outer edge of the rear tires are abnormally worn out and are peeling off due to the grinding (the tires were almost brand new when I got them.) Please advise. Thanks.

If they are peeling but previously had no signs of peeling/wearing at the outer edge the tire is too big it scrapes the inner part of the fenderwell. That is probably your grinding sound with or without passengers/load.

Simple test. If this has not happened before (with your stock wheels) then it's the tire.

Actually rent a "Fender Roller" and do a decent job of sealing the edge or repainting the edge area.

Thanks a lot for the advise, guys. I thought about reverting back to the original 14s but the 16s look mighty cool on the car that I decided to keep them on. Grinding the fender seems like a great idea. I've never even thought about that. Now, where can I rent this "fender roller" gizmo?

What he said.. 205/50-16 are way too big for your car.. 205/40-16 is the size you should have on.. the wheels and tires you got were probably on a bigger car like an Accord or Prelude before.
