Canada Premium VS Regular Gas

I just got a Corolla XRS. Thank door says to use premium gas but thought it would be ok to use just regular. Everything is stock, haven't done any mods to it yet. Anyone know if there's much of a difference between the two for regular driving in Canada?

Don't do it. Using premium gas in a car that doesn't require it won't do much. But the other way around is usually asking for trouble.

The car will run on regular gas if you need to use it in an emergency but I wouldn't use it as an everyday fuel. The compression ratio of our cars is very high 11.5:1. It needs the premium gas to avoid preignition. The knock sensor can retard the timing of the engine if it detects excessive knocking but I wouldn't bet the farm on your knock sensor keeping the engine from knocking all the time on regular gas. Besides all this you are going to suffer reduced performance on regular gas because of the timing being retarded.
