I don't know which transmission you're talking about but L means "low" or more specifically "1" or first gear. If the car is moving too fast to shift into first gear (say if you're going 70) then it will shift into second until it can shift into first.

Is that true even for the older Toyotas?


Anyway, L means it won't go above first gear, 2 means it won't go above second gear, D with O/D off means it won't go above third gear, and D with O/D on means it'll use all the gears.

The L for "low" gear in an auto trans can be used for a couple of reasons. 1.) towing- it's a lower gear ratio for low end power. 2.) for snow or icey conditions- it will give you good power and your wheels will not turn so fast as to give you more traction and control. but since you live in FL. you prolly won't need it for that. In low gear you can floor it and burn rubber too... but not recommended... behave!!!
