AE92 Brakes... Does it seem to be a problem ???

Hi,

I have an AE92 with 4AF engine. The brakes seems to have a problem. When I push the pedal, it brakes enugh to stop the car but vey difficult to lock the wheels. After about 8 - 10 pomps on the brake pedal, it brakes much more better and it can lock the wheels easily.
Does this seem to be a problem? If yes, how can it be solved?

Thnx for help.....

yes it does seem like a problem ...... check your brakes .... you should have drum in the back so try and make sure they are tight enought ..... i heard reverse with the parking break on helps tighten them up ....

Might be old brakefluid/air in the system.

I had a similar problem with my Lexus, had been abusing the brakes daily for a couple years. I flushed the old, funky brake fluid out and it works much better now.

If they used crappy / old fluid, it might.

I agree with changing the fluid first! When you're not sure always start with the least expensive possibility and work your way up. I will be doing my brakes on my AE92 wagon this weekend and changing my black fluid is on the agenda as well. By the way, if anyone needs very reasonable replacement parts try this link below. Shipping is free above $50 and the prices are the best I've seen. I bought new rotors, drums, front pads, and back shoes for like $125.......with free shipping!

I definitively agree with the comment to start with the most easy things to diagnose and work your way up. In regards to a braking system, there are a few things that you need to consider that might make you pedal feel soft. First of all just as mentioned previously air in the hydraulic system or old, worne brake fluid. Second would be your pads being overly worn on an old caliper in which the cylinder is close to siezing. This will cause a longer pedal stroke as well and you should be able to regain some of your pedal feel after a few applications. The last thing would be the master cylinder. A M/C is designed with two separate hydraulic ports. If one of these ports fails, due to seal weare or contamination, the secondary port will allow you to still stop the vehicle but with increased effort (force on the pedal) as well as increased stroke. You should also regain some of the pedal feel after pumping the brake. Other considerations for soft brakes can be small cracks in brake lines, worn brake flex lines going to your calipers and loose or rusted fittings. You should check the whole system for leaks. Hope this little bit helps and good luck on your trouble shooting.

Rafal
