T belt skip info
Found this write up while doing a search on toyota t belt skip. May be my problem and I just can't see it.
Brad Davis of Identifix gave us some helpful Toyota tips. He reports that due to the very long timing belt on several Toyota motors, techs run into a problem of having the tensioner push the cam out of position by a tooth or so. He recommends backing the cam off one tooth from the proper position and allowing the tensioner to pull the cam into place as it takes up the slack. Identifix often gets calls from techs stumped on a no-start with supposedly all the magic ingredients: Spark, fuel, and compression at 110 psi. The problem is a skipped belt. A properly-timed Asian car will often crank out 175 psi. Two teeth off will drop it to around 110 and the car won't start. Brad suggests checking ignition timing while cranking the engine. A Toyota should be very close to 10 degrees on the starter motor.
I'm just wondering if my t belt skipped a tooth while it was running to make it stall and not start unless I advanced the distributor.
