'74 engine/tranny swap

Hello! I am considering buying a local '74 Corolla w/1200 engine and 4 speed manual transmission. However, I would like to swap out the engine for a 1600. What else would I need to change? The transmission? Are there other, more powerful engines that will work well in this car, but would not require a new tranny?

Also, the grille on this car looks a little different than the one on the '74 Corolla we had when I was little. Were there 2 grilles available for the non-SR5 coupe? The only difference between the cars I know of is that one had the 1600 and one had the 1200. Also, one was bought out west, and one in Maryland!

You didn't specify which 1600 you had in mind, so I will safely assume a 4A-G.

You will need the transmission (T50).

Most engine swaps will require a tranny swap, but other engine options also include the 1.8L 3TC.

pjsammy... the 1600cc version of that Corolla is equipped with a T-type motor which is the 2TC. you have to get a T50 tranny for that motor. if you want to still use the K-series tranny, you're limited to a 4K motor which is the 1.3L version of yours, unless you use a modified bellhousing. however, there's a 5K and 7K motors but i don't see it as much. for the cost and labour, i'll just swap the motor and tranny to a newer one, 3TC with a T50 tranny. 1.8L!

btw, i'll post some pix of the different faces of the Corollas you're talking about later. i can't seem to find 'em.
