Question about putting a 20v twin cam into an ae86?
Hey guys, well just recently someone smashed into the front of my car in a parking lot. F250 backed into me. Tried to catch the guy or atleast get his plates, but my engine was screwed. Its blown now. Ive got the front clip from the struts up and I workin towards full restoration. I was just curious, is it hard to fit a 20v twin cam into an ae86? And also, if anyone on the forums lives in florida near the orlando area, know any good body/paint shops? or places that does great engine work?

20V 4AGE should be a straight drop-in. Well you'll need the ECU, harness, etc. of course.
Well thats not a stright drop in if its like that... besides you'd have to modify the distributor, it would hit the firewall if you were to install the engine directly. they offer remount kits that mount the distributor on the "camgear" end.
i've also heard that the water outlet becomes an issue... because like the 4afe, the 20V has the outlet & thermostat on the end of the head, rather as an external part like the 16v 4age's have.....
i've always wondered about remounting the dizzy..... if you move it to the other side of the engine, then it will be rotating the wrong direction..... even though the pickup wheels are symmetrical, the location of the actual pickups may need to be changed....

Chokolatecake... if you're going to a reputable shop, then you should be ok swapping the 20V in your AE86.the biggest problem for you is the waterlines and the dizzy like the guys said.
this is not an AE86 but you'll pretty much get the idea..
here's the engine bay view...
you can also use the OEM mounts from your car. i actually swapped my crossmember in favour of the AE86 one.
NOTE: when you get the 20V motor, make sure it's complete. if not at least make sure you have the harness and the AFM. you can always get the ECU from club4ag.com, there's a lot there.

kinda bringing back a dead topic. I'd cut that firewall anyday, it'll sure cost a lot less and i'm sure i wont burn to death if something were to happen.
anyhows, if this engine really is almost a straight drop on the '86, what happens with the transmission and the keeping the car a rwd'd vehicle? 'cause If the "biggest" problem really is water lines and relocating stuff, then its a very rather easy swap, just some few time consuming complications
