On the 90-92 Corollas, that button on front left corner of the (whatever you call that plastic assembly that is between the driver and passenger seats) and in front of the automatic shifter stick, releases the automatic shifter stick when the "shift computer" has locked it. For example, the stick should be locked (in park) till you depress the brake and have turned the key. If you find yourself having to use this button even though you behaved correctly then check your brake lights! If the fuse for the brake lights goes out, the "shift computer" doesn't work and you must resort to the button.
Two excellent places to get genuine Toyota Motor Company repair manuals are ebay.com and abebooks.com. You may have to visit them for several months before the manual you are interested in comes up. On abebooks, when you search, set the author to "Toyota" so you won't turn up the Chiltons type books.
I've never tried the various manuals-on-a-cd deals on ebay? Are they any good?
