Question 89 4AF carb proplems?

The only way my car will start is advancing the distributer. It ran great until just a few weeks ago it started fine and then died and would not start. I have gone over every thing and it has come down to the carburetor. Once the car is running and the distributer is back where it belongs it has some hesitation when you get on it. It looks like the plugs a getting black. I have read a thread were they talk about certain part need to be replaced on the carb. The carb has been replaced about 80k ago and it has 175k now.
There is a new coil, igniter, cap/wires,plugs,t belt, fuel filter.

Has anyone experience these symptoms?
Could a bad carb create this problem of only starting when timing is advanced?
