Please Help Me.

Hello, I am very ignorant when it comes to cars and my husband has tried to fix the car but we are at a lost. I would appreciate any ideas you all could give me..

I have an 89 corolla that has a carbeurator in it. If the car sits for any length of time it won't start. We had the auto store test the alternator and its good. We had new starter put in it about a yr ago. This is what we have done since this new problem started. New Battery, New spark plugs and wires, new fuel filter, new fuel pump. Check the hoses from the fuel filter to the pump and the pump to the carburetor and all look good. After much fustration we have finally figured out if we put gas into the carburetor the car starts right up no problems. It will stay running and will be fine until it sits for a while (like 4 hrs) then it won't start up. Now if it only sits for an hour or 2 its fine and will start up. Does anyone know what could be the problem and how we can go about fixing it ourselves? Just when we THINK we know what the problem is and replace a part well it doesn't work and I have been reading here alot and it seems that you guys know alot about cars so we would be very appreciative of any ideas you could give us..Thanks in Advance

Browneyes,

How do you "put the gas into the carburator?" Do you step on the accelerator pedal or you put in the gas literally?

You guys have done everything BUT fix the carburator, even though the carb itself its giving you signs that its in need of being looked at... chances are it might need to be rebuilt.

Thank you for your replies..Yes we put gas right into the carb itself not with the gas pedal. Well my husband says now he doesn't want to mess with it if its the carb and he wants to get rid of the car. He wants to get a truck. He said some guy will give him 200 bucks for it which is close to how much we just put into it and I think its worth a little more than that but he doesn't want to deal with it anymore. Thanks again for the replies.

Well you have already invested on it so it just worth a few more try. Clean the tank!
The fuel filter is blocked again because the tank is dirty. Replace the fuel filter again after the tnak is clean. That's all it is....
If you would give up on this one and buy another second hand unit and then encounter the same problem what would happen? You must learn to diagnose and repair especially when you're buying second hand units.
