1970s Corolla questions (newbie)
Hello all! In my continuing quest for a '74 Corolla (2 door coupe), I have come across quite a few variations on this vehicle from the 1970s. Can anyone help with the following questions? My research has included internet fansites, Toyota brochures, online auctions/classifieds and even old-fashioned books! These apply to US models only.
*First, what is the official name of the 2 door coupe, with a regular (non-hatchback) trunk? AE80? How is the SR-5 different from the conventional 4-speed manual (aside from the number of gears)? Is the SR-5 considered a different model, or is it just an option package (the way 442 was for Oldsmobiles of the same era)?
*How long was the '74's body style in effect? I have seen liftbacks, wagons, 4-doors, etc., but I am referring to the popular 2 door coupe. Some sources say this style arrived in '74, others say '73. I saw one of these labelled as a '71 (hopefully a misprint)! The style seems to have ended in either '78 or '79. Plus, I have seen different grilles within the same model year for what is supposed to be the exact same model!
*Was the Corolla rear-wheel drive during this entire time?
*Which engines were available for this car? I have seen 1200s and 1600s, mostly, but have heard tell of an 1100, 1300 and even an 1800. Which one(s) were available with a 5-speed manual transmission?
This info seems to be abundant for American cars of the era. Let's post some of this on Toyota Nation and glorify the the Corolla!
