Leak Coming From Instrument Panel?

I have a 92 corolla dx and there is a leak coming from my instrument panel and down into the floorboard. It smells like gearoil to me. I was just wondering if anyone has a clue where this is coming from before I tear into this.

hehe, i've heard of this happening in an mr2..... which is even crazier since the speedometer cable is another 3 feet long..... the seal for your speedometer gear in the tranny is bad and yes, the gear oil is travelling up your speedometer cable and dripping down your dash

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that was the cause but second thought that was supposed to be trans fluid at the speedometer cable not gear oil. Always go on first instinct I guess.

It's gear oil, although I don't understand it since I have the same problem and I have an auto trans. I've replaced the lower end of the cable to no avail and all the seals in the gear assembly...

if you're leaking in an auto... the only thing i can think of is that your tranny is potentially too full... & maybe too much pressure is building up... it will leak through the path of least resistance.....
