C56 Trans vs C52

I am preparing a '87 MR2 for Sports Car Club of America Road Racing. I have a C52 trans presently. I have seen internet posts indicating that the C56 trans from a '93 AE101 Levin (Japan vehicle) is a better version of the C52. I have not found definative info as to the substitution of the C56 for the C52. I am concerned that the inner axles of the C56 may differ from those of the C52. I want to use the axles from my Normally Aspirated MR2 (small diameter/light weight). I would appreciate any info addressing my inquiry.

I swapped an AE101 engine and tranny into a 1990 Corolla GTS and used the original CV shafts and they were a direct swap. No mods needed.

Even if the axles work, what about the shift linkages? Aren't they on the other side of the transmission on the MR2?

yeah.... it's been done before though.... you can switch to the mr2 linkage by drilling a hole and adding a seal..... but i didn't want to go through that myself....

What is the chance that the shifter section of the MR2 C52 can be swapped with the same section of the C56?

^^ Even if the shifter section can be used, you may have troubles with the axles/CV's.

The problem i had when going from a C50 on the Aussie built 4A-FE to the Jap-Built C52 was that one of the Ineer CV's has a bracket for the C50, so i couldn't use the axles i had on the engine, and i couldnt take the bracket off of the engine cause the CV would sag.

The other trouble you may have with the C56, is being the 6-speed gearbox made for slightly more power, i think the axle is heavier, or has more splines, so you may have troubles with the hubs.

Good Luck finding a C56 tho... They are rare as Hens teeth. I spent two years looking for one, to no luck.
