what's my engine type?

hi all,

i have a 96 corolla sd and i don't know whether my engine's the 4a-fe (1.6L) or 7a-fe (1.8L).

i know the sd's supposed to have a 1.6, but i think i remember the mech saying it was a 1.8 back when i was getting it emmission tested.

so is there some way i could pop the hood, look and just tell? should it be written somewhere?

as well, any recommendations on what kind of upgrades or whatever i could do if it's either engine type to boost fuel economy and performance?

tia

Its on one of the labels on the hood or firewall.
Do a VIN check in CarFAX. You can't get full report but it'll tell you basic info on the car.

You should have a sticker on your engine.
Or check the block number.. it would say 4A or 7A

there is a sticker on the under side of the hood (drivers side near the front corner) it will either say 4A-FE or 7A-FE ...as you know the 4 is a 1.6l and the 7 is 1.8l.

Usually the words performance and fuel economy dont go together, however you may start by helping it breathe better by putting an exaust system (including hi-flow cat) and cold/cool air intake on it and that should boost fuel economy a little. The power changes wont be too defined tho.
