USA 95 Corolla and Check Engine Light . . . help!

About a month ago the check engine light came on my 95 Corolla. I called 2 repair shops and they both told me to tighten the gas cap. I did that and there was no change, so I put a brand new cap on. The light went out, then about 2 weeks after the new cap the light is back on. I took the negative cable off last night for a few minutes and then put it back on, the light went out, today it is back on. What should I do? The car has 154,000 miles and no problems, maybe the O2 sensor went out, please advise. Also, can I check the code myself, if yes, how? Dealer wants $114 just to check it out.

RP

PS Where are the O2 sensors and how hard are they to replace?

when you place your gas cap on.. do you click it atleast 5 times?

if it isn't that.. then there could be something else wrong with the car.. have you realized any issues with how the car is running? how's your fuel economy?

if its a 95 its OBD1 so get a hayne's manual and trouble shoot it, i haven't done mine in a while but i believe you jump TE1 and E1 in the dianostics port with a short wire then turn the key to ACC and count the blinks of the check engine light then cross reference that in the haynes manual and you will have an answer, just check before you go sticking wires in your diagnostic port because memory may not be serving correctly...LOL
