98 Corolla Check Engine Light

I have a 98 Corolla and the check engine light came on while driving. I looked in the manual and the problem could be:
a) Fuel tank is completely empty (1/2 tank of gas observed)
b) Fuel cap is not tightened. (I checked and it was tightened)
c) Problem with engine or automatic transmission.

I'm guessing it's problem "C" , but how can I figure out what it is. Is there a service light where I can get a code to see what the problem is and a manual where I can interpret the code?

Dave

I live in Canada. I don't think we have an Autozone here. Is there a manual I could buy?

Is there anyway to get the code without taking it to a shop?

Thats real intresting. When I first got my corolla the check engine light came on and stayed on. 2 months later I blew the engine. Well I guess the light was right but it wasn't. I repaced the motor and the cluth and the light still stayed on. Sounds like you have the same problem I had.

obdII

You need an OBDII scanner. They sell for ~$45 on ebay. Get the Creader one

If you opened your fuel cap while the motor was running, this would trigger your engine light also, and simply needs to be reset and the light will disappear.
