93-97 Corolla Tie Bar and Sway bar

I was looking around on ebay for rear sway bars, and I noticed a rear tie bar....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW
For some reason I thought to use a tie bar you needed a rear sway bar or anti sway bar..... I don't know much about suspension. Is that tie bar usable with stock suspension or do I need something else for it to work? Also, are rear sway bars and anti sway bars the same thing? Thanks.

Looks like a strut bar but for the rear. You're gonna have to cut through cloth/metal. I know nothing about suspension either.

Haha... Well they make rear strut bar, so I don't think it's for there... My friend has a tie bar and it's underneath the trunk, I thought it was attached to his rear seay bar, but I might be wrong. I was thinking of trying to improve my suspension, but just don't know much about it. Time for research...

That ebay item reminds me of this:

The only things I can think of to be tied under the trunk are the lower arms.

I don't think that's what a tie bar is for... I believe that it's about the length of a strut bar and it acts like a strut bar basically, just underneath the car in the rear.

Doesn't that kinda ruin the concept of independent suspension?

Hmmm, you may have a good point there.... I'm not really sure of the physics of it, but I got under my car today and it looks like there is a rear-sway bar stock.... Kind of small though. I was wondering, does anyone know if 93-97 corolla's have stock rear or anti-sway bars? If not, then I'll probably take a picture of what I'm talking about and try and find out what it is.

Any more info on Tie Bars anyone?

I think it's just like a rear strut tower bar. You cut through some trunk fabric, link the two struts together, and that's it. I don't think it goes under the car.

The rear strut tower bar for 93-97 is not easy to come by.
Since the mounts are inside the cabin, it is necessary to see if there is anything intervening to the bar around the upper part of the backseat. You can take a look what a rear strut bar is like:

The part with the bolt holes (i don't know the appropriate term for it) is designed in a way that the bar itself is kind of "lifted" due to some obstacles behind the backseat.

On the other hand, it is easier to make rear strut bars for cars whose rear strut mounts are in the trunk.
Below is the rear strut bar for Mitsubishi Eclipse

The bar on ebay which you showed cannot by any means be a strut bar. see how many bolt holes on it. Only one.

Lower arm bars are among the bars which the manufacturers claim to increase rigidity of your car. And under the car you can only get lower arm bars (or "under brace") on most occassions. You may take a look at this: http://www.importperformance.com/store/sk-518-05-1870

Since corolla has had a stock rear swaybar. You can get a bigger swaybar (like the 18mm item from http://www.whiteline.com.au or the hollow bar from TRD). So it makes little sense to mount another bar which works like a swaybar.

It seems not necessary to put a "strut bar" under the car. On the upper part of the strut you can get a strut bar (for the non-vertically-moveable section). For the lower part (the vertically moving part), you have the sway bar. Since the lower part is always vertially moving, a strut bar tied between the two struts is impossible.

You dont need a rear strut brace, the unibody under the back dash is more than enough bracing. the only reason you'd need it is if (like in a hatchback) the strut towers are not attached or connected to each other which allows the body to flex.

It definately looks like an upgraded rear sway bar like what you were talking about will help a bit. Still can't figure out where exactly the tie bar would to go to be able to see if it has a purpose or not...
