windshield cracked

I got a stonelet in my windshield, and now I need to change the windshield. (does not cry for a new one, but I don't like it this way)

Can I do it myself? Do I need special tools? Searched the forum for a tutorial or something, but could not find one.

?

Take it to a windshield place and see if it actually does need replacing. Most will repair them for next to nothing.

As for doing it yourself, it's not recomended, as it is very easy to miss a spot of silocone and get water in the car. Windshield repairers should give you a no leak warranty if it does even need replacing...

You didn't state what kind of car you have, I also suggest that unless you know what your doing and if the car is newer take it to a repair place.. I don't blame you not liking it especially if its right in front of your driving vision(you tend to always look at it)..People think that by getting a window chip/crack filled it will make your window "like new" not so unless this chip is really, really small and not cracked you will still see it (filled) especially if its in your line of view, ..the fix mostly is to prevent the glass from cracking farther..I have had that done to a couple beater cars a found this to be true..I would suggest an insurance claim but your deductible would probably match the cost of a new window anyways..you could ask around at auto parts/repair places to see if they know anyone that does that kind of work on the side(meaning an off/out of work glass guy) My brother in law does this kind of work and just threw in a window for a friend of mine at cost and a twelve pack ....good luck, Radd Guy

If the crack is smaller than the size of a dollar bill, it can be fixed. Otherwise it needs replaced. Usually you'll see some coupons in the mail or in the paper. I had my windshield replaced for $150. They came to my house and had the work done in about 30 minutes. Did a great job too!!!

Unfortunatelly, the crack is big. To make things worse, when it was the ice rain here in Atlanta and got 1/2" of ice on my windshield, I started the heating system........

I would not use insurance for it, as it doesn't worth it!

I was curios if trims or dash board need to be undone to remove the windshield, or the widshield is removed/fit from outside.

Hm, well I know that most insurances pay for small chips on windshields for free because it'll cost them more to replace your windshield than fix a small one. You just have to ask.

If you have a low deductible, you can find a small shop that'll pay for the deductible for you. My dad had a small crack on his windshield and some guy came to his work and offered to fix it, pay the deductible, and handle all the insurance paperwork. Dad paid nothing and did nothing and got a new windshield.

haha.. I got a crack that goes from one corner of the windshield to the other.. it was a 3 inch crack last winter, but one day it was really cold.. I cranked the heat and all I heard was a sonic boom (I swear that's what it sounded like! ) and the crack expanded from one side of the windshield to the other. I'm not changing it yet.. got pulled over already and the cop never saw it.

The only shop in the GTA that fixes what you guys are all talking about.

I got a crack in my windshield, did some research, called some shops, did some more research, then found this place...

Our deductible is 100 bucks. My dad never got the price of the new windshield. We always figured that the guy just took it out of his cut because windshields weren't that expensive to begin with and he makes money either way. Afterall, we are supposed to be paying him the deductible, not the insurance company.

And if you're insurance rates are up, it isn't because of our one windshield. For real incidents, we have to pay our jacked up premiums too. For the most part, I hear that a lot of shops do this (don't charge deductible). I always figured because 100 bucks is enough of a discount to get you to leave your car with them.
