hi all, i just bought a 1977 corolla SR5 "sport coupe" for a driving to work car, and i'm having trouble w/ it not starting and once it does start it won't stay running. i just put new gaskets in everywhere, new rad, plugs, vacuum hoses, etc. the fuel mixture screw does not seem to affect the engine at all, and i've tweked the idle up to about 2500 to get it to stay running. it is the 1.6L 2T-C engine with a whole bunch of miles and any info i can get on this would be very helpful. thanks.

Its hard to diagnose a car with a problem like that, theres just so many different things it could be. But its likely either fuel or ignition related.

You could just take it to a real mechanic. Unless you are one.
Mabey it is time for an engine swap/rebuild. How many km is on it?

Thank you very much Supraturbo. Now comes another dumb newbie question: what do i do with this info? I've narrowed it down to a few things that it could be -->
1. FU513 MAR 78 Fuel - Filter Standardization
2. EL512 NOV 76 Ignition - Breaker Point Adjustment Procedure
3. FU512 SEP 76 Fuel - Rough Running During Engine Warm-Up

This is the first car that i've really been able to get into it and tear things apart then put it back together and it's quite fun!
When I got the car, it had RTV everywhere, and I have pulled that out and put in correct gaskets, etc. But not having a strong mechanical backgroun, i'm not sure if I want to attempt digging into a carb (which is what I think is wrong with it).
So do I take this info to a mechanic and pay them 60 bucks to just look at it and say that it's not fixable? or is it something is can do myself?
and is that subscription to ALLDATA worth it to get the tech docs and fix-it papers?
Thanks again.

Could be a combination of those issues bro. As deep was saing (hit the nail right on the head you overachiever!) Ignition and fuel combination....

And don't get a subscription to alldata.

Information is free damnit... I'll try to find more stuff, but run google.com searches for "2T-C" and "77 corolla gts". And that kind of info is for the taking.
